Mary (Maryam)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Kaf. Ha'. Ya'. Ayn. Sad. 1 This is an account of your Lord's mercy bestowed upon His servant Zachariah, 2 Recall what time he cried unto his Lord with a cry secret. 3 he prayed: "O my Sustainer! Feeble have become my bones, and my head glistens with grey hair. But never yet, O my Lord, has my prayer unto Thee remained unanswered. 4 And now I fear my kinsfolk after I am gone; and my wife is barren. So give me, from Thee, a kinsman 5 "(One that) will (truly) represent me, and represent the posterity of Jacob; and make him, O my Lord! one with whom Thou art well-pleased!" 6 (It was said unto him): O Zachariah! Lo! We bring thee tidings of a son whose name is John; We have given the same name to none before (him). 7 "How can I have a son, O Lord" he said, "when my wife is barren and I am old and decrepit?" 8 He said, "It will be so! Your Lord says, 'It is easy for Me for I created you when you were nothing before.'" 9 [Zechariah] said, "My Lord, make for me a sign." He said, "Your sign is that you will not speak to the people for three nights, [being] sound." 10 So he came forth unto his people from the Sanctuary, then he made signal to them, 'Give you glory at dawn and evening.' 11 (And it was said unto his son): O John! Hold fast the Scripture. And we gave him wisdom when a child, 12 and tenderness from Us and purity, and he was cautious; 13 And dutiful to his parents, and he was not a disobedient tyrant. 14 Peace be on him on the day of his birth, and on the day of his death, and peace will be on him on the day he is raised up to life again. 15
