The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ Nay! I swear by this city 1 And thou art an indweller of this city - 2 and [I call to witness] parent and offspring: 3 We created the human in fatigue. 4 What, does he think none has power over him, 5 And he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth: 6 What, does he think none has seen him? 7 Did We not assign unto him two eyes 8 One tongue, and two lips, 9 And have shown him the two ways? 10 Yet he attempteth not the steep, 11 And what will make you comprehend what the uphill road is? 12 It is freeing someone's neck from slavery; 13 Or the giving of food in a day of privation 14 to an orphaned relative 15 Or of a homeless needy person! 16 And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion. 17 These are the people of the right hand. 18 And those who disbelieve Our signs - they are the fellows of the lefthand. 19 On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round). 20
