The Thamud gave the lie to the Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: Will ye not ward off (evil)? 142 Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you, 143 “Therefore fear Allah and obey me.” 144 "And no reward whatever do I ask of you for it: my reward rests with none but the Sustainer of all the worlds. 145 Will you be left in what is here, secure [from death], 146 “In gardens and water springs?” 147 And green crops (fields etc.) and date-palms with soft spadix. 148 carving comfortable houses out of the mountains? 149 Fear Allah and obey me 150 And obey not the command of the prodigal, 151 Who spread corruption in the earth, and reform not. 152 They replied: "You are nothing but one of those who are bewitched; 153 you are no different from a mortal like us. So produce a sign if you are truthful." 154 He said: "Here is a she-camel; it has a right to drink (water), and you have a right to drink (water) (each) on a day, known. 155 And do not touch her with harm, lest you be seized by the punishment of a terrible day." 156 But they hamstrung her; and on the morrow were repentant, 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 But, verily, thy Sustainer - He alone - is almighty, a dispenser of grace! 159
