The Town (Al-Balad)

20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)

In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

۞ Nay! I swear by this city. 1 and thou art a lodger in this land; 2 and I swear by the parent and his offspring: 3 that We have created man into a life of toil and trial. 4 Does he think that no one has power over him? 5 He says, "I have spent enormous wealth." 6 Deemest he that none beholdeth him? 7 Did We not make two eyes for him? 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 and guided him on the two highways? 10 But he would not try to ascend the steep uphill road... 11 Would that you knew what Aqaba is! 12 (It is:) freeing the bondman; 13 or the feeding in times of famine 14 of an orphan near of kin, 15 or a needy man in misery; 16 and, then besides this, he be one of those who believed, and enjoined upon one another steadfastness and enjoined upon one another compassion. 17 These are the fellows of the righthand. 18 As for those who rejected Our Signs, they are the People of the Left Hand. 19 and the Fire will close in on them. 20
