Thamood, belied their Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: Will ye not ward off (evil)? 142 Behold, I am an apostle [sent by Him] to you, [and therefore] worthy of your trust: 143 So fear Allah and obey me. 144 For this I demand no recompense from you; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe. 145 "Will ye be left secure, in (the enjoyment of) all that ye have here? 146 amidst gardens and fountains, 147 “And fields and palm-trees, with delicate tendrils?” 148 Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains? 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 Do not obey the order of the wasteful, 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and mend not (their ways)." 152 They said: Thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 "You are but a human being like us. Then bring us a sign if you are of the truthful." 154 (Saleh) said: "Here is a she-camel. She has a right of drinking water, and you have a right of drinking it on appointed turns. 155 And touch her not with ill, lest there take hold of you the torment of a Mighty Day. 156 But they hamstrung her and so became regretful. 157 For they were seized by the torment. Verily there was a sign in this, but most of them did not believe. 158 And lo! thy Lord! He is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
