The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
A requester seeks the punishment that will take place 1 those who deny the truth. [Know, then, that] nothing can ward it off, 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of ascent. 3 To whom the angels and the soul take a day to ascend, whose length is fifty thousand years. 4 (Muhammad), exercise patience with no complaints. 5 they see it as being far off; 6 but We see it near at hand. 7 On that Day the heaven shall become like molten copper, 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 and [when] no friend will ask about his friend, 10 although they shall be within sight of one another. The guilty one would fain ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his children, 11 His wife and his brother, 12 And his kindred who sheltered him, 13 And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save him. 14 By no means! Surely it is a flaming fire 15 that will strip off the scalp. 16 It will summon whoever turns his back and flees, 17 And collect (wealth) and hide it (from spending it in the Cause of Allah). 18 ۞ Lo! man was created anxious, 19 Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him; 20 And niggardly when good reaches him;- 21 Except those who establish prayer. 22 and constant in their prayers. 23 And those in whose wealth there is a fixed portion. 24 For the beggar who asks, and for the unlucky who has lost his property and wealth, (and his means of living has been straitened); 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense 26 and fear the chastisement of their Lord 27 the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, 28 who guard their carnal desires 29 [not giving way to their desires] with any but their spouses - that is, those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock]: for then, behold, they are free of all blame, 30 (but whoso seeks after more than that, they are the transgressors), 31 And those who keep their trusts and covenants; 32 and standby their witnessing, 33 And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: 34 They will live in gardens with honour. 35
