Dawn (Al-Fajr)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
I CALL TO witness the dawn 1 And the ten nights, 2 And the even and the odd, 3 And by oath of the night when it recedes 4 Considering all this - could there be, to anyone endowed with reason, a [more] solemn evidence of the truth? 5 Seest thou not how thy Lord dealt with the 'Ad (people),- 6 Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars, 7 The like of which were not created in the land? 8 And with the Thamud (people), who cut out (huge) rocks in the valley?- 9 And Pharaoh, of the pegs (impaling his victims)? 10 Who committed inordinacy in the cities, 11 and caused much corruption in them: 12 So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment. 13 Truly your Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for man, when his Lord tests him by exalting him and bestowing His bounties upon him, he says: “My Lord has exalted me.” 15 But when He tries him by restraining his means, he says: "My Lord despises me." 16 Nay! But you treat not the orphans with kindness and generosity (i.e. you neither treat them well, nor give them their exact right of inheritance)! 17 Nor do ye encourage one another to feed the poor!- 18 and you greedily devour the inheritance of the weak, 19 and love the riches, loving them ardently. 20 Nay, but when the earth is ground to atoms, grinding, grinding, 21 And thy Lord cometh, and His angels, rank upon rank, 22 And Hell will be brought near that Day. On that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance (then) avail him? 23 He will say: "Alas the woe! Would that I had sent ahead something in my life." 24 Wherefore on that Day none shall torment with His torment. 25 And no one shall bind with (anything like) His binding. 26 O soul that art at rest! 27 Return towards your Lord – you being pleased with Him, and He pleased with you! 28 enter, then, together with My [other true] servants 29 And come into My Paradise! 30
