The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
Read with the name of your Lord Who created, 1 He created man from a clot of blood. 2 Recite thou: And thy Lord is the Most Bounteous, 3 Who teacheth by the pen, 4 Taught man that which he knew not. 5 Nay, verily, man becomes grossly overweening 6 As he considers himself independent! 7 Verily, to thy Lord is the return (of all). 8 What thinkest thou? He who forbids 9 A bondman of Ours when he prayeth 10 Have you seen if he was upon guidance 11 or orders piety? 12 Bethinkest thou, if he belieth and turneth away? 13 Does he not know that Allah sees? 14 Let him know that if he does not desist, We shall certainly drag him by his forelocks, 15 A lying, sinful forelock! 16 Let him call on his associates for help 17 [the while] We shall summon the forces of heavenly chastisement! 18 Beware! Do not obey him, but bow in adoration and draw near (to your Lord). ۩ 19
