[AND the tribe of] Thamud gave the lie to [one of God's] message-hearers 141 Behold, their brother Salih said to them: "Will you not fear (Allah)? 142 "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust. 143 So fear God and follow me. 144 For this I demand no recompense from you; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe. 145 Will ye be left secure in that which is here before us, 146 "Gardens and Springs, 147 “And fields and palm-trees, with delicate tendrils?” 148 And you carve out of the mountains, homes, with skill. 149 So fear you God, and obey you me; 150 Do not follow those who are extravagant, 151 those who spread corruption on earth instead of setting things to rights!" 152 They said, "You are only bewitched and insane. 153 "Thou art no more than a mortal like us: then bring us a Sign, if thou tellest the truth!" 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. For her is a [time of] drink, and for you is a [time of] drink, [each] on a known day. 155 Do not touch her with malice so that punishment of a dreadful day seizes you' 156 But they hamstrung her, and then were penitent. 157 So the punishment overtook them. Most surely there is a sign in this, but most of them do not believe. 158 Surely thy Lord, He is the All-mighty, the All-compassionate. 159
