Al-A 'araaf 14 of 24
Said the Chiefs of the people of Pharaoh: "This is indeed a sorcerer well-versed. 109 He would drive you forth from your land; so what is it that ye enjoin? 110 They answered: "Let him and his brother wait awhile, and send unto all cities heralds 111 “To bring all the expert magicians to you.” 112 And the magicians came unto Fir'awn. They said: surely there is for us a reward if we are the overcomers. 113 He said: "Yes, and moreover you will (in that case) be of the nearest (to me)." 114 They said, 'Moses, wilt thou cast, or shall we be the casters?' 115 He answered: "You throw [first]." And when they threw down [their staffs,] they cast a spell upon the people's eyes, and struck them with awe, and produced mighty sorcery. 116 Then We directed Moses: 'Now you throw your rod.' And lo! it swallowed up all their false devices. 117 ۞ So the truth was established, and abolished was what they were doing. 118 So they were defeated there and then, and were returned disgraced. 119 And the magicians fell down in prostration [to Allah]. 120 They said, "We have believed in the Lord of the worlds, 121 "The Lord of Moses and Aaron." 122 The Pharaoh said to the magicians, "You declared your belief in him (Moses) without my permission. This is a plot to throw my people out of their city. But you will soon know. 123 I will surely cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides; then I will surely crucify you all." 124 They replied, "We shall surely return to our Lord. 125 You would take revenge on us only because we believed in the signs of our Lord when they came to us. Lord, pour patience upon us and let us die as submitters (Muslims)' 126

How does the memorization exercise algorithm work? At the lowest level 0, all words are visible. While the highest level 9 hides all words. What about at mid-level, like 3, for example? You might think that the algorithm hides precisely 3 out of every nine words. Not quite! At level 3, each word has a 3 out of 9 chance to hide, and 6 out of 9 to be visible. In other words, it is possible, but highly unlikely, for all words at level 3 to be hidden, or, that all of them to be visible! Also, at mid-levels, and in proportion to the difficulty level, hideouts can be partially incomplete or transparent so that words may be partially visible underneath.
