A throng of the ancients 39 And a multitude of those (on the Right Hand) will be from the later times (generations). 40 The Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) 41 In hot wind and boiling water, 42 scalding water and under a shadow of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor refreshing. 44 They had lived in luxury before this 45 And they persisted in the great violation. 46 They used to say: “What! Once we are dead and are reduced to dust and bones, shall we still be raised to a new life from the dead? 47 We and our fathers of old? 48 (Muhammad), say, "All the ancient and later generations 49 Will all be brought together to the tryst of an appointed day. 50 Then you, you misguided ones, who deny the truth, 51 "You verily will eat of the trees of Zaqqum. 52 Fill your bellies with it, 53 And thereon ye will drink of boiling water, 54 And drink as drinks the thirsty camel. 55 This is their entertainment on the day of requital. 56 It is He who created you, then why do you not affirm the truth? 57 Have you thought about [the semen] that you discharge -- 58 Is it you who create it (i.e. make this semen into a perfect human being), or are We the Creator? 59 We have incorporated death in your constitution, and We shall not be hindered 60 that We may exchange the likes of you, and make you to grow again in a fashion you know not. 61 And indeed, you have already known the first form of creation (i.e. the creation of Adam), why then do you not remember or take heed? 62 Have you seen what you sow? 63 Is it you who cultivate it, or is it We Who develop it? 64 If We will, We would make it broken stubble and you would remain wondering, 65 Surely we are burdened with debt: 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 And have you seen the water that you drink? 68 Do ye bring it down (in rain) from the cloud or do We? 69 If We will, We would make it bitter, why then do you not give thanks? 70 Have you seen the fire which you kindle? 71 Produce ye the tree thereof, or are We the Producer? 72 We have made it to be a reminder and a benefit for the wayfarers. 73 So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
