The tribe of Thamud also rejected the messengers. 141 When their fellowman Saleh said to them, “Do you not fear?” 142 "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust. 143 so fear you God, and obey you me.' 144 And I ask of you no wage therefor; my wage is the concern only of the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Will you be left secure in what is here; 146 "Gardens and Springs, 147 and cornfields and date-palms laden with juicy fruits? 148 hewing out houses in the mountains and taking pride in your skill? 149 So be mindful of God and listen to me. 150 And do not obey the bidding of the extravagant, 151 Who cause corruption in the land and do not amend." 152 They said, "You are only of those affected by magic. 153 you are no different from a mortal like us. So produce a sign if you are truthful." 154 Replied he: "This she-camel shall have a share of water, and you shall have a share of water, on the days appointed [therefor]; 155 Do not touch her with malice so that punishment of a dreadful day seizes you' 156 But they hamstrung her; and on the morrow were repentant, 157 For they were seized by the torment. Verily there was a sign in this, but most of them did not believe. 158 But, verily, thy Sustainer - He alone - is almighty, a dispenser of grace! 159
