The Hijjr Valley (Al-Hijjr)
99 verses, revealed in Mecca after Joseph (Yousuf) before Animals (Al-An 'aam)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ Alif-Lam-Ra; these are verses of the Book and the bright Qur’an. 1 Again and again will those who disbelieve, wish that they had bowed (to Allah's will) in Islam. 2 Leave them alone, to enjoy (the good things of this life) and to please themselves: let (false) hope amuse them: soon will knowledge (undeceive them). 3 And We did not destroy any city but that for it was a known decree. 4 No nation can outstrip its term nor can they lag behind. 5 And they said, “O you upon whom the Qur’an has been sent, you are indeed insane.” 6 Why dost thou not bring the angels unto us, if thou speakest truly?' 7 We do not send down angels except for a genuine purpose, at which time none will be given any further respite. 8 Verily We! it is We who have revealed the admonition, and verily We are the guardians thereof. 9 And indeed We sent Noble Messengers before you, to the former nations. 10 But never once an apostle came to them at whom they did not scoff. 11 Even so do We [now] cause this [scorn of Our message] to pervade the hearts of those who are lost in sin, 12 They will not believe in it, while there has already occurred the precedent of the former peoples. 13 Had We opened a door for them in the sky through which they could easily pass, 14 yet would they say, 'Our eyes have been dazzled; nay, we are a people bewitched!' 15

How does the memorization exercise algorithm work? At the lowest level 0, all words are visible. While the highest level 9 hides all words. What about at mid-level, like 3, for example? You might think that the algorithm hides precisely 3 out of every nine words. Not quite! At level 3, each word has a 3 out of 9 chance to hide, and 6 out of 9 to be visible. In other words, it is possible, but highly unlikely, for all words at level 3 to be hidden, or, that all of them to be visible! Also, at mid-levels, and in proportion to the difficulty level, hideouts can be partially incomplete or transparent so that words may be partially visible underneath.
