Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
By the dawn, 1 And the Ten Nights, 2 by the even and the odd, 3 by the night when it journeys on! 4 Is there in this an oath for one endowed with understanding? 5 Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with Ad, 6 the people of the huge columned city of Eram 7 The likes of whom had never been created in the land? 8 And with Thamud who carved rocks in the valley; 9 And with Pharaoh, lord of stakes? 10 Who (all) were rebellious (to Allah) in these lands, 11 spreading in them much corruption? 12 (Therefore) your Lord let loose upon them a scourge of punishment; 13 Most surely your Lord is watching. 14 BUT AS FOR man, whenever his Sustainer tries him by His generosity and by letting him enjoy a life of ease, he says, "My Sustainer has been [justly] generous towards me"; 15 but when He tests him by straitening his means of livelihood, he says, "My Lord has disgraced me." 16 No indeed; but you honour not the orphan, 17 and you urge not the feeding of the needy, 18 And you readily devour the inheritance with greed. 19 And you love wealth with immense love. 20 Nay! When the earth is ground to powder, 21 and [the majesty of] thy Sustainer stands revealed, as well as [the true nature of] the angels; rank upon rank? 22 And Hell will be brought near that Day. On that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance (then) avail him? 23 He will say: "Alas! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my life!" 24 On that day the punishment of God and His detention will be unparalleled. 25 Nor shall any bind with His bond. 26 O you tranquil soul, 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him], 28 So enter among My servants, 29 And enter My Paradise." 30
