The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
I swear by the night when it draws a veil, 1 And by oath of the day when it shines 2 And Him Who hath created male and female, 3 Your striving is most surely (directed to) various (ends). 4 Yet he who gives to others and has fear, 5 and believes in the finest, 6 We will make smooth for him the path of ease (goodness). 7 But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need 8 And disbelieveth in goodness; 9 Surely We will ease his way unto adversity. 10 When he falls (into Hell), his wealth will not help him. 11 Verify on us is the guidance 12 and to Us belong the Last and the First. 13 Now I have warned you of a Fire that flames, 14 None shall reach it but those most unfortunate ones 15 who denied [the truth], and turned away. 16 And avoid it shall the most pious, 17 [He] who gives [from] his wealth to purify himself 18 not as payment for any favours that he received, 19 Except the seeking of the pleasure of his Lord, the Most High. 20 He will surely be well-pleased (with him). 21
