[AND] the dwellers of the wooded dales [of Madyan] gave the lie to [one of God's] message-bearers 176 Shu'ayb asked them, "Why do you not have fear of God? 177 I have been sent as a trusted messenger to you. 178 I ask of you no wage for this; 179 I do not ask any payment for my preaching. I shall receive my reward from the Lord of the Universe. 180 ۞ "Give just measure, and cause no loss (to others by fraud). 181 and weigh with the straight scale, 182 And do not withhold from people what belongs to them, and do not corrupt the land; 183 and have fear of Him Who created you and the earlier generations." 184 They said: "Surely you are deluded. 185 "Thou art no more than a mortal like us, and indeed we think thou art a liar! 186 So cause a fragment of the sky to fall on us, if you are truthful." 187 He said: "My Lord knows best what ye do." 188 They rejected him and then the torment of the gloomy day struck them. It was certainly a great torment. 189 Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers. 190 And indeed your Lord – only He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 191
