In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
You, who have wrapped yourself up with a mantle, 1 Keep awake [in prayer] at night, all but a small part 2 It may be half the night or a little less than that 3 Or add to it, and recite the Quran as it ought to be recited. 4 We shall soon entrust to you a message heavy (with solemnity). 5 Verily the rising by night! it is most curbing and most conducive to right speech. 6 Surely you have in the day time a long occupation. 7 So remember the name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with exclusive devotion. 8 He is the Lord of the East and the West. There is no god but He. So take Him alone as your protector. 9 And bear with patience what they utter, and part from them with a fair leave-taking. 10 And leave them to Me – these wealthy deniers – and give them some respite. 11 Verily, with Us are fetters (to bind them), and a raging Fire. 12 And food that will stick in the throat, and painful torment 13 On the Day when the earth with all its mountains quake and the mountains become heaps of shifting sand. 14 Verily We! We have sent unto you an apostle, a witness over you, even as We sent unto Fir'awn an apostle. 15 But Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger; so We seized him with a heavy Punishment. 16 How then, if you disbelieve, will you preserve yourselves on the day which will even turn the children hoary? 17 [the Day] on which the skies shall be rent asunder, [and] His promise [of resurrection] fulfilled? 18 Indeed this is nothing but a Good Counsel; so let him who will take a way leading to his Lord. 19
