Al-Balad
The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ Nay! I swear by this city. 1 And thou shalt be allowed in yonder city 2 and I swear by the parent and his offspring: 3 We have indeed created man surrounded by hardships. 4 Thinks he that none can overcome him? 5 He says, "I have spent enormous wealth." 6 Thinketh he that none beholdeth him? 7 Did We not assign unto him two eyes 8 and a tongue, and a pair of lips, 9 and guided him on the two highways? 10 So he did not quickly enter the steep valley. 11 And what will make you comprehend what the uphill road is? 12 It is freeing the neck, 13 And to feed in the day of hunger. 14 An orphan, of kin, 15 Or the poor in distress; 16 And to be of those who believe, and urge upon one another to persevere, and urge upon each other to be kind. 17 Their place will be on the right hand. 18 But those who disbelieve Our revelations, their place will be on the left hand. 19 Fire will be an awning over them. 20
