The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Read (Prophet Muhammad) in the Name of your Lord who created, 1 Created man from a clinging substance. 2 Read: And thy Lord is the Most Bounteous, 3 who taught by the pen, 4 Taught man what he knew not. 5 Nay, verily, man becomes grossly overweening 6 because he thinks that he is independent. 7 Indeed, to your Lord is the return. 8 Seest thou one who forbids- 9 a servant when he prays -- 10 Tell me, if he (Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) is on the guidance (of Allah)? 11 Or enjoins righteousness? 12 Have you considered if he gives the lie to the truth and turns (his) back? 13 Does he, then, not know that God sees [all]? 14 No indeed; surely, if he gives not over, We shall seize him by the forelock, 15 by the lying forelock steeped in sin. 16 Then, let him call his assembly, 17 and We too will call the stern and angry keepers of hell. 18 Nay! obey him not, and make obeisance and draw nigh (to Allah). ۩ 19
