Mary (Maryam)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Kaf. Ha. Ya. 'Ayn. Sad. 1 The mention of thy Lord's mercy unto His servant Zachariah; 2 When he called out to his Sustainer in the secrecy of his heart, 3 saying, 'O my Lord, behold the bones within me are feeble and my head is all aflame with hoariness. And in calling on Thee, my Lord, I have never been hitherto unprosperous. 4 I am afraid of what my kinsmen will do after (my death) and my wife is barren. Lord, grant me a son 5 "Who shall inherit me, and inherit (also) the posterity of Ya'qub (Jacob) (inheritance of the religious knowledge and Prophethood, not the wealth, etc.). And make him, my Lord, one with whom You are Well-pleased!". 6 “O Zakaria! We give you the glad tidings of a son whose name is Yahya (John) – before him, We have not created anyone of this name.” 7 "My Lord!" [said Zachariah], "How shall I have a son when my wife is barren and I have reached such extreme old age?" 8 (The angel) said, "This is true, but your Lord says, 'For Me it is easy; I created you when you did not exist". 9 He said, 'Lord, appoint to me some sign.' Said He, 'Thy sign is that thou shall not speak to men, though being without fault, three nights.' 10 Then he came out from the Sanctuary to his nation, and gestured to them to exalt (their Lord) at the dawn and at the evening. 11 'O John, take the Book forcefully'; and We gave him judgment, yet a little child, 12 And (made him) sympathetic to men as a mercy (or a grant) from Us, and pure from sins [i.e. Yahya (John)] and he was righteous, 13 kind to his parents, not arrogant or a rebellious person. 14 He was born and died in peace and will be brought back to life again in peace. 15
