A multitude of those (on the Right Hand) will be from the first generation (who embraced Islam). 39 And a multitude from the later generations. 40 The Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand? 41 Will be in the scorching wind and boiling water, 42 and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, 43 which will neither be cool nor soothing. 44 They had lived in luxury before this 45 and would persist in heinous sinning, 46 And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? 47 And also our forefathers? 48 Say: 'Those of ancient times and those of later times 49 "All will certainly be gathered together for the meeting appointed for a Day well-known. 50 Then shall you, O you who err and call it a lie! 51 You will indeed eat from the Zaqqum tree. 52 "Then you will fill your bellies therewith, 53 and thereupon you shall drink boiling water, 54 Drinking even as the camel drinketh. 55 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Have you considered the seed? 58 Do you yourselves create it, or are We the Creators? 59 It is We who have ordained death for all of you; and We cannot be prevented 60 In that We will change your likenesses and produce you in that [form] which you do not know. 61 And indeed, you have already known the first form of creation (i.e. the creation of Adam), why then do you not remember or take heed? 62 So what is your opinion regarding what you sow? 63 Is it you who cultivate it, or is it We Who develop it? 64 If We willed, surely We would make it chaff, so that ye would be left wondering. 65 'We are debt-loaded; 66 nay, we are deprived [altogether]." 67 Have you ever considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it you who sent it down from the clouds or is it We who have sent it down? 69 [It comes down sweet - but] were it Our will, We could make it burningly salty and bitter: why, then, do you not give thanks [unto Us]? 70 Have you ever considered the fire which you kindle? 71 Did you make its tree grow or was it We Who made it grow? 72 We have made it a Reminder (for the Hell-fire, in the Hereafter); and an article of use for the travellers (and all the others, in this world). 73 (Muhammad), glorify your Lord, the Great One. 74
