He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 Because there came to him the blind man. 2 And what would make you know that he would purify himself, 3 or take heed and derive benefit from [Our] warning? 4 As to one who regards Himself as self-sufficient, 5 to a rich man, 6 though you are not to be blamed if he would not purify himself -- 7 but as for him who came unto thee full of eagerness 8 And is afraid (of Allah and His Punishment), 9 Of him wast thou unmindful. 10 Not this way – this is the advice. 11 Therefore let whoso will, keep it in remembrance. 12 (Contained) in honoured pages, 13 Exalted (in dignity), purified, 14 [Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels, 15 Honourable and Virtuous. 16 Woe to man! What hath made him reject Allah; 17 From what has God created him? 18 Of a drop of seed. He created him and formed him according to a measure. 19 then the way eased for him, 20 Then gave him death, so had him put in the grave. 21 and then, if it be His will, He shall raise him again to life, 22 Not one – he has not yet completed what he was commanded. 23 Let man consider his food: 24 We let the rain pour down in torrents 25 Then split the earth in clefts 26 And produce therein corn, 27 And grapes and vegetables 28 And olives and date palms, 29 And gardens of dense shrubbery 30 and fruits and pastures – 31 all this as a provision for you and your cattle. 32 But when the deafening cry shall be sounded 33 On the Day a man will flee from his brother 34 and his mother and his father; 35 and his consort and his children; 36 Everyone on that Day will have affairs to keep him occupied. 37 Some faces that Day, will be bright (true believers of Islamic Monotheism). 38 Laughing, rejoicing. 39 Some faces on that Day shall be dust-ridden, 40 and veiled with darkness. 41 Those! they are the infidels, the ungodly. 42
