The great ones among Pharaoh's people said: "Verily, this is indeed a sorcerer of great knowledge, 109 who desires to expel you from your land; what do you command?' 110 They said, 'Put him and his brother off a while, and send among the cities musterers, 111 to summon every skilful magician to your presence.' 112 And so the sorcerers came to Fir'aun (Pharaoh). They said: "Indeed there will be a (good) reward for us if we are the victors." 113 "Yes," said he, "you will be among the honoured." 114 They said: "O Moses! wilt thou throw (first), or shall we have the (first) throw?" 115 'Throw' he replied. And when they threw, they bewitched the people's eyes and terrified them, and produced great sorcery. 116 And We inspired to Moses, "Throw your staff," and at once it devoured what they were falsifying. 117 ۞ Thus the Truth prevailed and their false art was banished. 118 Thus they were vanquished there, and they went back abased. 119 and the magicians flung themselves prostrate, 120 They said: "We believe in the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists). 121 "The Lord of Moses and Aaron." 122 Said Pharaoh: "Have you come to believe in him ere I have given you permission? Behold, this is indeed a plot which you have cunningly devised in this [my] city in order to drive out its people hence! But in time you shall come to know, [my revenge]: 123 I will certainly cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, then will I crucify you all together. 124 The magicians said, "We will certainly return to Our Lord. 125 Will you punish us just because we believed in the signs of our Lord when they came to us? Our Lord! Shower us with perseverance and cause us to die as those who have submitted [to You].' 126
