Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha. Mim. 1 By the Clear Book. 2 Lo! We revealed it on a blessed night - Lo! We are ever warning - 3 Therein every wise affair is made distinct, 4 As a command from before Us. Verily We were to become senders: 5 as a Mercy from your Lord. Surely He is All-Hearing, All-Seeing, 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them; if you people believe. 7 There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. 8 yet, they toy with their doubts. 9 So be on the watch for a day when heaven shall bring a manifest smoke 10 engulfing the people; this will be a painful punishment. 11 (Then they will say): Our Lord relieve us of the torment. Lo! we are believers. 12 How can there be for them an admonition (at the time when the torment has reached them), when a Messenger explaining things clearly has already come to them. 13 yet they turned away from him and said: “This is a well-tutored madman.” 14 If We remove the torment a little, you revert back (to misdeeds). 15 The day when We will seize with the greatest seizure – We will indeed take revenge. 16 ۞ We had tried the people of Pharaoh before them. A respected prophet had come to them (saying): 17 Saying: Give up to me the slaves of Allah. Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you. 18 Do not think yourselves to be above God: I have come to you with clear authority. 19 "For me, I have sought safety with my Lord and your Lord, against your injuring me. 20 And if you do not believe me, [at least] stand away from me!" 21 Moses addressed his Lord, saying, "Lord, these people are sinners". 22 (The reply came:) "March forth with My Servants by night: for ye are sure to be pursued. 23 (Cross and) leave the sea undisturbed. The (pursuing) hosts will surely be drowned," 24 How many gardens and fountains they left behind them, 25 And green crops (fields etc.) and goodly places, 26 And the delights which they had been enjoying! 27 Even so (it was), and We made it an inheritance for other folk; 28 Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they respited; 29
