I told them, "Messengers, eat from the pure things and act righteously; I know all that you do. 51 Your religion is but one religion -- and I am your only Lord, therefore, fear Me. 52 But they (who claim to follow you) have torn their unity wide asunder, piece by piece, each group delighting in [but] what they themselves possess [by way of tenets]. 53 So leave them to their ignorance for a time. 54 Do they think that by what We aid them with of wealth and children, 55 We provide them with the means of competing with each other in virtuous deeds, but they do not realize this. 56 Surely they who from fear of their Lord are cautious, 57 And those who in the signs of their Lord do believe. 58 And those who do not associate (aught) with their Lord, 59 And those who give what they give and their hearts fear for they have to return to their Lord. 60 These hasten to good things and they are foremost in (attaining) them. 61 And We charge no soul except [with that within] its capacity, and with Us is a record which speaks with truth; and they will not be wronged. 62 Yet their hearts are oblivious of this; and besides, they are busy with other things, 63 Until, when We seize in Punishment those of them who received the good things of this world, behold, they will groan in supplication! 64 "Do not supplicate for help today; you will not be rescued by Us; 65 Indeed My Verses used to be recited to you, but you used to turn back on your heels (denying them, and with hatred to listen to them). 66 "In arrogance: talking nonsense about the (Qur'an), like one telling fables by night." 67 Was it that you did not give any thought to it (the Quran)? Was it different from what was revealed to your fathers? 68 Or is it, perchance, that they have not recognized their Apostle, and so they disavow him? 69 Or do they say that there is madness in him? Nay, he has brought them the Truth and it is the Truth that most of them disdain. 70 Had the truth followed their fancies, the heavens, the earth, and all who live in them would have surely been corrupted. No, We brought them their Remembrance; but from their Remembrance they turn away. 71 Or do you, [O Muhammad], ask them for payment? But the reward of your Lord is best, and He is the best of providers. 72 And lo! thou summonest them indeed unto a straight path. 73 And most surely those who do not believe in the hereafter are deviating from the way. 74 ۞ If We took compassion on them and removed the affliction they are in, they would only wander lost in confusion. 75 And assuredly We took hold of them with the torment, yet they humbled not themselves to their Lord, nor did they entreat. 76 until We open before them a gate of [truly] severe suffering [in the life to come]: and then, lo! they will be broken in spirit. 77
