And whoever is averse to the Remembrance of the Most Gracious, We appoint a devil upon him, who stays with him. 36 whereupon, behold, these [evil impulses] bar all such from the path [of truth,] making them think that they are guided aright! 37 But when he comes to Us, he will say (to his satan): “Would that there had been between me and you the distance as between the East and the West. How evil a companion you were!” 38 It will be said [to such a person], "You have done wrong. Having partners in punishment will be of no avail to you today." 39 CANST THOU, perchance, [O Muhammad,] make the deaf hear, or show the right way to the blind or to such as are obviously lost in error? 40 We shall punish them whether We take you away, 41 Or (if) We show you that wherewith We threaten them, then verily, We have perfect command over them. 42 So hold thou fast to the Revelation sent down to thee; verily thou art on a Straight Way. 43 Verily it is a great source of eminence for you and your people, and soon you will be called to account concerning that. 44 And ask thou Our apostles whom We sent before thee: appointed We gods, beside the Compassionate, to be worshipped? 45
