The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ NAY! I call to witness this land 1 And you, [O Muhammad], are free of restriction in this city - 2 And [by] the father and that which was born [of him], 3 We have indeed created man surrounded by hardships. 4 Does he think that no one can overpower him? 5 And he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth: 6 Does he think that no one has seen him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes 8 a tongue, and two lips, 9 and guided him on the two highways? 10 But he has made no effort to pass on the path that is steep. 11 Would that you knew what Aqaba is! 12 It is freeing the neck, 13 Or the giving of food in a day of privation 14 To the orphan with claims of relationship, 15 or of a needy [stranger] lying in the dust 16 the believers who cooperate with others in patience (steadfastness) and kindness. 17 They are the people of the right hand (and will succeed). 18 As for those who rejected Our Signs, they are the People of the Left Hand. 19 Over them shall be Fire closing round. 20
