The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the sun and its brightness 1 and by the moon as it follows it; 2 by the day when it brightens the earth, 3 And the night when it draws a veil over it, 4 By the Firmament and its (wonderful) structure; 5 by the earth and Who spread it, 6 And a soul and Him Who perfected it 7 and imbued it with (the consciousness of) its evil and its piety: 8 prosperous is he who purified it, 9 and failed is he who buried it! 10 Thamood cried lies in their insolence 11 when that most hapless wretch from among them rushed forward [to commit his evil deed,] 12 although God's apostle had told them, "It is a she-camel belonging to God, so let her drink [and do her no harm]!" 13 In response they belied him, and hamstrung the she camel – so Allah put ruin over them because of their sins and flattened their dwellings. 14 He dreadeth not the sequel (of events). 15
