The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By oath of the sun and its light 1 and by the moon as it follows it, 2 By the day when it glorifieth it. 3 By the Night as it conceals it; 4 Consider the sky and its wondrous make, 5 and by the earth and by Him Who stretched it out; 6 And by oath of the soul and by oath of Him Who made it proper. 7 And inspired in it the knowledge of its sins and its piety. 8 He who purifies it will indeed be successful, 9 And he has failed who instills it [with corruption]. 10 In their presumptuous insolence the Thamud called the Truth a lie 11 When among them the great wretch arose, 12 But the Messenger of Allah [Salih (Saleh)] said to them: "Be cautious! Fear the evil end. That is the she-camel of Allah! (Do not harm it) and bar it not from having its drink!" 13 But they rejected his statement as a lie and hamstrung the she-camel. For that crime their Lord rumbled down upon them, utterly razing them to the ground. 14 God is not afraid of the result of what He had decreed. 15
