Some of the Pharaoh's nobles considered him to be no more than a skillful magician 109 who seeks to drive you from your land what do you command' 110 Others said: 'Put them off a while, he and his brother, and send forth to your cities gatherers 111 “To bring all the expert magicians to you.” 112 So there came the sorcerers to Pharaoh: They said, "of course we shall have a (suitable) reward if we win!" 113 He answered: Yes, and surely ye shall be of those brought near (to me). 114 They said: O Musa! either thou cast down, or we shall be the ones to cast down. 115 He said, "You throw [first]!" When they made their cast, they bewitched the eyes of the people and struck them with awe, for they showed a great [feat of] magic. 116 Then We revealed to Moses: 'Now, throw down your staff' And thereupon it swallowed up their false invention. 117 ۞ So the truth came to pass, and false was proved what they were doing. 118 Pharaoh and his men were defeated and put to shame, 119 And the magicians fell down in prostration [to Allah]. 120 and said, "We believe in the Lord of the Universe, 121 the Lord of Moses and Aaron!" 122 The Pharaoh said to the magicians, "You declared your belief in him (Moses) without my permission. This is a plot to throw my people out of their city. But you will soon know. 123 I shall cut off your hands and feet on the opposite sides, and then crucify you all.' 124 They replied, "We shall surely return to our Lord. 125 for thou takest vengeance on us only because we have come to believe in our Sustainer's messages as soon as they came to us. O our Sustainer! Shower us with patience in adversity, and make us die as men who have surrendered themselves unto Thee!" 126
