THUS, INDEED, have We sent Moses with Our messages unto Pharaoh and his great ones; and he said: "Behold, I am an apostle of the Sustainer of all the worlds!" 46 But when he brought to them Our signs they laughed at them, 47 even though each sign We showed them was greater than the previous one. We afflicted them with torment so that they might return [to the right path]. 48 And they said [to Musa (Moses)]: "O you sorcerer! Invoke your Lord for us according to what He has covenanted with you. Verily, We shall guide ourselves (aright)." 49 but when We relieved them of the torment, they broke their word. 50 And Fir'aun (Pharaoh) proclaimed among his people, saying: "O my people! Is not mine the dominion of Egypt, and these rivers flowing underneath me. See you not then? 51 "Am I not better than this one [Musa (Moses)], who is Mahin [has no honour nor any respect, and is weak and despicable] and can scarcely express himself clearly? 52 Why have no armlets of gold been given him, or angels sent down successively with him' 53 He (Pharaoh) intimidated his nation, so they obeyed him, for they were a sinning nation. 54 Then when they displeased Us, We inflicted a retribution on them, so We drowned them all together, 55 And We made them a precedent and an example for the later peoples. 56
