He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 from a blind man who had come up to him. 2 What made you think that he will not grow in virtue, 3 Or that he might receive admonition, and the teaching might profit him? 4 As for him who thinks himself self-sufficient, 5 to him didst thou give thy whole attention, 6 Though it is not your concern if he should not grow (in fulness). 7 But as for him who cometh unto thee with earnest purpose 8 and in awe [of God] 9 Of him wast thou unmindful. 10 Assuredly this is a reminder 11 So whoso wills may give heed to it. 12 (Contained) in honoured pages, 13 Exalted (in dignity), kept pure and holy, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 noble and pious. 16 Perish Man! How unthankful he is! 17 [Does man ever consider] out of what substance [God] creates him? 18 He created him from a living germ. He determined his fate 19 and then makes it easy for him to go through life; 20 Then He causes him to die, then assigns to him a grave, 21 then, when He wills, He raises him. 22 By no means he performed not that which He had commanded him. 23 So man must look at his food. 24 That We pour forth water in abundance, 25 Then We cracked the earth open under pressure (of germination) 26 And cause the grain to grow therein 27 and vines, and reeds, 28 olives, dates, 29 Orchards thick with trees, 30 And fruits and grasses: 31 In order to benefit you and your cattle. 32 Then, when there comes As-Sakhkhah (the Day of Resurrection's second blowing of Trumpet), 33 on a Day when everyone will [want to] flee from his brother, 34 And his mother and his father, 35 his wife and his sons: 36 Everyone on that Day will have affairs to keep him occupied. 37 [Some] faces, that Day, will be bright - 38 laughing and joyful, 39 some faces on that day shall be dusty 40 o'erspread with darkness -- 41 Those are the disbelievers, the wicked. 42
