In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
O you who have wrapped up in your garments! 1 Keep awake [in prayer] at night, all but a small part 2 (Worship Him) for more or less than half of the night 3 Or increase thereto. And intone the Qur'an with measured intonations. 4 We are about to cast upon you a weighty Word. 5 Surely in the watches of the night the soul is most receptive and words more telling. 6 Surely you have in the day time a long occupation. 7 And remember the name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with [complete] devotion. 8 He is the Lord of the east and the west, there is no deity but Him, so take Him as your Guardian. 9 And patiently endure upon what the disbelievers say, and leave them for good. 10 And leave Me with [the matter of] the deniers, those of ease [in life], and allow them respite a little. 11 We have prepared for them fetters, flaming fire, 12 And food that will stick in the throat, and painful torment 13 On a day when the earth and the mountains will tremble, and the mountains turn into dunes of flowing sand. 14 Verily, We have sent to you (O men) a Messenger (Muhammad SAW) to be a witness over you, as We did send a Messenger [Musa (Moses)] to Fir'aun (Pharaoh). 15 But Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger; so We seized him with a heavy Punishment. 16 If you, disbelieve, how will you be able to protect yourselves from the hardships of the day which would even turn children grey-headed? 17 On that day, the heavens will be rent asunder. This is the decree of God which has already been ordained. 18 Indeed, this is a reminder, so whoever wills may take to his Lord a way. 19
