The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall 1 the unbelievers which none can prevent. 2 From Allah, the Lord of all pinnacles. 3 To Him the angels and the Spirit mount up, in a day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore be patient, with a beautiful patience; 5 Surely they think it to be far off, 6 Whereas We see it impending. 7 The day when the sky will become as molten copper, 8 And the hills will be light as wool. 9 And no friend will ask of a friend, 10 Though they will be given sight of them. The guilty man will long to be able to ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children 11 his companion wife, his brother, 12 And his nearest kindred who shelter him 13 And all that are in the earth, if then it might deliver him. 14 No! Indeed, it is the Flame [of Hell], 15 Eager to roast; 16 It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. 17 And collected [wealth] and hoarded. 18 ۞ VERILY, man is born with a restless disposition. 19 Fretful when evil befalleth him 20 If good comes to him he holds back his hand, 21 Except those devoted to Salat (prayers) 22 and continue at their prayers, 23 those in whose wealth is a right known 24 For the beggar and the destitute; 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgment, 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's doom - 27 for none may ever feel secure from the punishment of their Lord; 28 and who are mindful of their chastity, 29 [not giving way to their desires] with any but their spouses - that is, those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock]: for then, behold, they are free of all blame, 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, they are the transgressors. 31 (Those) who keep their trusts and their covenant, 32 And those who are upright in their testimonies, 33 And those who of their prayer are observant. 34 They will be honoured in the Gardens of Bliss. 35
