The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
I CALL TO witness the sun and his early morning splendour, 1 And the moon when she followeth him, 2 And the day when it revealeth him, 3 And the night when it enshroudeth him, 4 By the heaven and Who built it, 5 and by the earth and by Him Who stretched it out; 6 By the soul, and That which shaped it 7 And its enlightenment as to its wrong and its right;- 8 Prosperous is he who purifies it, 9 And indeed failed is the one who covered it in sin. 10 Thamud denied [their prophet] by reason of their transgression, 11 when the most wicked man among them rose up. 12 So the Noble Messenger of Allah said to them, “Stay away from the she camel of Allah, and from its turn to drink.” 13 But they gave him the lie, and cruelly slaughtered her - whereupon their Sustainer visited them with utter destruction for this their sin, destroying them all alike: 14 He does not fear the consequence. 15
