So they both proceeded: until, when they were in the boat, he scuttled it. Said Moses: "Hast thou scuttled it in order to drown those in it? Truly a strange thing hast thou done!" 71 He answered: "Did I not tell thee that thou canst have no patience with me?" 72 He said, 'Do not take me to task that I forgot, neither constrain me to do a thing too difficult.' 73 So they departed; until, when they met a lad, he slew him. He said, 'What, hast thou slain a soul innocent, and that not to retaliate for a soul slain? Thou hast indeed done a horrible thing.' 74 ۞ Said he, 'Did I not say that thou couldst never bear with me patiently?' 75 (Moses) said: "If ever I ask thee about anything after this, keep me not in thy company: then wouldst thou have received (full) excuse from my side." 76 They continued on their journey again until they reached a town. They asked the people there for food, but no one accepted them as their guests. They found there a wall of a house which was on the verge of tumbling to the ground. The companion of Moses repaired that wall. Moses said, "You should have received some money for your labor." 77 He replied, "This is where we should depart from one another. I shall give an explanation to you for all that I have done for which you could not remain patient. 78 As for the ship, it belonged to certain poor men, who toiled upon the sea; and I desired to damage it, for behind them there was a king who was seizing every ship by brutal force. 79 "The young boy had very faithful parents. We were afraid that out of love for him they would lose their faith in God and commit rebellion 80 So we intended that their Lord should substitute for them one better than him in purity and nearer to mercy. 81 And as for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the city, and there was beneath it a treasure belonging to them, and their father had been righteous, and thy Lord intended that they should come to their full strength and should bring forth their treasure as a mercy from their Lord; and I did it not upon my own command. Such is the interpretation of that wherewith thou couldst not bear. 82
