The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
A questioner asked of a chastisement about to fall 1 to those who deny the truth. No power can hinder God 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of Ascent. 3 The angels and the spirit ascend unto him in a Day the measure whereof is (as) fifty thousand years: 4 Therefore patiently endure, in the best manner (O dear Prophet Mohammed peace and blessings be upon him). 5 They see it [the Day of Judgement] to be far off, 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 Upon the day when heaven shall be as molten copper 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 And no friend inquires after friend 10 Though they shall be made to see one another. Fain would the guilty ransom himself from the torment of that Day by his children. 11 And his spouse and his brother 12 And his family who had stood by him, 13 and whosoever is in the earth, altogether, so that it might save him. 14 But never. It is pure white flame 15 A fire that melts the hide. 16 It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. 17 and who accumulated wealth without spending it for a good purpose. 18 ۞ Surely man is created of a hasty temperament 19 Being greatly grieved when evil afflicts him 20 but when good comes upon him, he is grudging 21 Except those devoted to Salat (prayers) 22 Those who are constant at their prayer 23 And those in whose wealth exists a recognised right, 24 for such as ask [for help] and such as are deprived [of what is good in life]; 25 who acknowledge the Day of Judgment, 26 And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord - 27 the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, 28 And those who guard their private parts, 29 except from their wives and what their right hands own, for these they are not blameworthy. 30 But those who trespass beyond this are transgressors;- 31 And those who respect their trusts and covenants; 32 and standby their witnessing, 33 and who guard their prayers [from all worldly intent]. 34 They will live in gardens with honour. 35
