He Frowned ('Abasa)
42 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Stars (Al-Najm) before Destiny (Al-Qadr)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) while he was preaching to one or some of the Quraish chiefs). 2 What could inform thee but that he might grow (in grace) 3 Or that he might receive admonition, and the teaching might profit him? 4 As for him who was indifferent, 5 You pay full attention, 6 And you have nothing to lose if he does not become pure. 7 And as to him who comes to you striving hard, 8 And with fear (in his heart), 9 you pay him no heed. 10 Nay, but verily it is an Admonishment, 11 Let him who will, pay heed to it. 12 It is contained in scrolls highly honoured, 13 Exalted, purified, 14 In the hands of scribes (angels). 15 and angelic scribes. 16 Cursed be man! how ungrateful is he! 17 [Does man ever consider] out of what substance [God] creates him? 18 From a single sperm He created, then proportioned him, 19 Then eased the way for him. 20 Then gave him death, so had him put in the grave. 21 Then when He listeth, He shall raise him to life. 22 Nay; but he has not done what He bade him. 23 So let man just consider his food: 24 That We pour forth water in abundance, 25 Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts], 26 Then We cause therein the grain to grow, 27 and vines, and reeds, 28 olives, dates, 29 the densely tree'd gardens, 30 And fruit and grass - 31 Provision for you and your cattle. 32 When the trumpet sounds, 33 upon the day when a man shall flee from his brother, 34 And from his mother and father, 35 And his wife and his children, 36 Each one of them, that Day, will have enough concern (of his own) to make him indifferent to the others. 37 Faces on that Day shall be beaming, 38 laughing and joyful, 39 some faces on that day shall be dusty 40 Blackness will cover them. 41 Those are the disbelievers, the wicked. 42
God Almighty has spoken the truth.
