Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha. Mim. 1 By the luminious Book. 2 We have sent it down in a blessed night (We are ever warning) 3 During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. 4 determined as a bidding from Us, (We are ever sending) 5 in pursuance of thy Sustainer's grace [unto man]. Verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing, 6 Lord of the heavens and earth, and all that between them is if you have faith. 7 there is no deity save Him: It is He who gives both life and death -- He is your Lord, and the Lord of your forefathers, 8 Nay, but they are in doubt, playing. 9 But watch thou (O Muhammad) for the day when the sky will produce visible smoke 10 Which would envelope mankind. That would be a grievous affliction. 11 'Our Lord, remove this punishment from us, we are believers' 12 How can there be for them an admonition (at the time when the torment has reached them), when a Messenger explaining things clearly has already come to them. 13 Yet they turned their backs on him and said: One taught (by others), a madman. 14 If We remove the torment a little, you revert back (to misdeeds). 15 Upon the day when We shall assault most mightily, then We shall take Our vengeance. 16 ۞ And certainly We tried before them the people of Firon, and there came to them a noble apostle, 17 (and said): “Deliver to me Allah's servants. I am a trustworthy Messenger to you, 18 Do not rise up against Allah, I come to you with clear authority. 19 I have taken refuge in my Lord and your Lord against your stoning me to death. 20 And if you do not believe me, then leave me' 21 Then he called upon his Lord: “These are a criminal people.” 22 (His Lord answered): 'Set out with My worshipers in the night, for you will surely be followed. 23 “And leave the sea as it is, parted in several places; indeed that army will be drowned.” 24 How many were the gardens and the watersprings that they left behind, 25 And fields and stately mansions, 26 And the comfort they enjoyed. 27 We gave these as an inheritance to other people. 28 And the heaven and the earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. 29

When reading the Colorful Quran in English transliterated Arabic mode, you may not notice that there is an algorithm designed to match the pause requirements of the original Arabic scripture, (waqf signs). As you may know, the original Arabic Quran has five main types of pauses, (waqf) signs. (1) Compulsory break, where the transliteration uses a full stop. (2) Optional pause with the preference for pausing, where the transliteration uses a comma that may appear with a probability of two thirds. (3) Optional stop with an equal preference for pausing and resuming, where the transliteration uses a comma that may appear with a half-half probability. (4) Optional pause with the preference for resuming, where the transliteration uses a comma that may appear with a chance of one third. (5) Attraction pause, also called hugging, or (mu’anaka) sign, where it is compulsory to pause at either one of two nearby positions, but not both; where the transliteration inserts a comma at either one of the two locations with a half-half probability.
