And the chieftains of his folk, who disbelieved and denied the meeting of the Hereafter, and whom We had made soft in the life of the world, said: This is only a mortal like you, who eateth of that whereof ye eat and drinketh of that ye drink. 33 "If you were to obey a human being like yourselves, then verily! You indeed would be losers. 34 Does he promise you that when you die and have become dust and bones, that you will be brought forth again? 35 ۞ How far-fetched what you are promised; 36 There is nought but our life of the world; we die and we live, and we are not going to be raised up. 37 "He is only a man who has invented a lie against Allah, but we are not going to believe in him." 38 [Whereupon the prophet] would say: "O my Sustainer! Succour me against their accusation of lying!" 39 Answered (the Lord): "They shall wake up repenting soon." 40 So the shriek seized them in truth, and We made them as [plant] stubble. Then away with the wrongdoing people. 41 After them We brought another generation into existence. 42 No nation can live beyond its allotted time, or lag behind. 43 Then We sent Our Messengers in succession. Whenever a Messenger came to his people they rejected him, calling him a liar. Thereupon, We made each people to follow the other (to its doom), reducing them to mere tales (of the past). Scourged be the people who do not believe! 44 Then We sent Moses and his brother Aaron with Our signs and clear authority 45 To Pharaoh and his establishment, but they were arrogant and were a haughty people. 46 and they said, 'What, shall we believe two mortals like ourselves, whose people are our servants?' 47 They called them liars and consequently were destroyed. 48 And indeed We gave Moosa the Book, that they may attain guidance. 49 And [as We exalted Moses, so, too,] We made the son of Mary and his mother a symbol [of Our grace,] and provided for both an abode in a lofty place of lasting restfulness and unsullied springs. 50
