The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ Nay! I swear by this city 1 And thou art an indweller of this city - 2 and I swear by the parent and his offspring: 3 Verily, We have created man in toil. 4 Thinks he that none can overcome him? 5 He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance." 6 Does he, then, think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 a tongue, and two lips? 9 and guided him on the two paths (of good and evil)? 10 Yet he attempteth not the steep, 11 And what have you understood, what the valley is! 12 It is freeing someone's neck from slavery; 13 Or feeding on a day of severe hunger 14 to an orphan near of kin; 15 Or the poor in distress; 16 and, then besides this, he be one of those who believed, and enjoined upon one another steadfastness and enjoined upon one another compassion. 17 Those who do so are the people of the right hand, 18 And those who disbelieve Our signs - they are the fellows of the lefthand. 19 who will be engulfed in the fire. 20
