The Thamud (people) rejected the messengers. 141 When their brother Salih (Saleh) said to them: "Will you not fear Allah and obey Him? 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 "So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 I ask of you no reward. My reward is with none but the Lord of the Universe. 145 Will ye be left secure in that which is here before us, 146 Within gardens and springs 147 And tilled fields and heavy-sheathed palm-trees, 148 “And you carve out dwellings in the mountains, with skill?” 149 Therefor keep your duty to Allah and obey me, 150 "And follow not the bidding of those who are extravagant,- 151 Who corrupt the land and do not reform it." 152 They said, “You are under a magic spell.” 153 You are but a human like ourselves. Produce for us a sign, if you are of the truthful' 154 Salih said: "This is a she-camel. There is a day set for her to drink and there is a day set for you to drink. 155 "And touch her not with harm, lest the torment of a Great Day seize you." 156 Then they hamstrung her; and then they became regretful. 157 So the chastisement seized them. Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. 158 And lo! thy Lord! He is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
