The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ I do call to witness this City;- 1 And you are free (from sin, to punish the enemies of Islam on the Day of the conquest) in this city (Makkah). 2 And by the begetter and that which he begat, 3 We created the human in fatigue. 4 Does he think that none has power over him! 5 He boasts, "I have spent wealth abundant!" 6 Thinketh he that none beholdeth him? 7 Did We not give him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips? 9 And did We not guide him to the two elevated things? 10 But he has not attempted the ascent. 11 And what have you understood, what the valley is! 12 To free a neck (from the burden of debt or slavery), 13 or the feeding, upon a day of [one's own] hunger, 14 to an orphaned relative 15 or of a needy [stranger] lying in the dust 16 And moreover to be of those who accepted faith, and who urged patience to one another and who urged graciousness to one another. 17 Those are the companions of the right. 18 whereas those who are bent on denying the truth of Our messages - they are such as have lost themselves in evil, 19 On them is fire closed over. 20
