Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
HA MIM. 1 I swear by the illustrious Book. 2 that We sent down during a Blessed Night. We are ever warning. 3 on that night every wise decree is specified 4 [Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger] 5 As mercy from your Lord. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing. 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all between them, if ye (but) have an assured faith. 7 there is no deity save Him: It is He who gives both life and death -- He is your Lord, and the Lord of your forefathers, 8 Nay, but they play in doubt. 9 Wait, then, for the Day when the sky brings forth plainly visible clouds of smoke. 10 which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. 11 "O Lord, take away this torment from us," (they will pray); "we have come to believe." 12 How should they have the Reminder, seeing a clear Messenger already came to them, 13 Yet they turned away from him and said: one tutored, one distraced. 14 If We remove the torment a little, you revert back (to misdeeds). 15 On the Day whereon We assault them with the greatest assault, verily We shall take vengeance. 16 ۞ We had certainly tested the people of the Pharaoh before them to whom a noble Messengers had come, saying, 17 saying, 'Deliver to me God's servants; I am for you a faithful Messenger, 18 Do not consider yourselves above God. I shall show you a manifest authority (in support of my truthfulness). 19 and, behold, it is with my Sustainer - and your Sustainer - that I seek refuge against all your endeavours to revile me. 20 If you do not believe in me, leave me alone." 21 And [finally] he called to his Lord that these were a criminal people. 22 (Allah said): "Depart you with My slaves by night. Surely, you will be pursued. 23 "And leave the sea as a furrow (divided): for they are a host (destined) to be drowned." 24 How much they left behind of gardens and springs 25 And the cornlands and the goodly sites 26 And comforts of life wherein they used to take delight! 27 Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] 28 And the heavens and the earth wept not for them, nor were they given a respite. 29

How does the memorization exercise algorithm work? At the lowest level 0, all words are visible. While the highest level 9 hides all words. What about at mid-level, like 3, for example? You might think that the algorithm hides precisely 3 out of every nine words. Not quite! At level 3, each word has a 3 out of 9 chance to hide, and 6 out of 9 to be visible. In other words, it is possible, but highly unlikely, for all words at level 3 to be hidden, or, that all of them to be visible! Also, at mid-levels, and in proportion to the difficulty level, hideouts can be partially incomplete or transparent so that words may be partially visible underneath.
