a multitude of the ancients, 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 But those of the left hand -- how those of the left hand -- 41 They will live amid the scorching, 42 scalding water and under a shadow of black smoke, 43 neither cool, neither goodly; 44 Surely they had lived before in luxury, 45 But persisted in that greater sin, 46 And said: "What! When we are dead and turned to dust and bones, shall we then be raised again? 47 Will our ancient forefathers be resurrected too? 48 Say thou: verily the ancients and those of later generations: 49 shall be gathered together to the appointed time on a known Day' 50 Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers, 51 Shall surely eat of the tree of Az-Zqqum. 52 And fill (your) bellies with it; 53 and on top of this you will drink boiling water 54 Lapping it up like female camels raging of thirst with disease." 55 This is their entertainment on the day of requital. 56 We have created you: why then do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you seen that which you emit? 58 Did you create it, or are We the Creator? 59 We have destined death for you and no one can challenge Us 60 that We will change you and cause you to grow again in a way you do not know. 61 And indeed, you have already known the first form of creation (i.e. the creation of Adam), why then do you not remember or take heed? 62 Ponder upon the soil you till, 63 Is it you or We Who make them grow? 64 We could turn it, if We pleased, into straw; then you would rue the day, 65 'We are debt-loaded; 66 nay, we are deprived [altogether]." 67 Have you seen the water which you drink? 68 Send it down ye from the raincloud, or are We the Sender down? 69 If We pleased, We would have made it salty; why do you not then give thanks? 70 Have you considered the fire which you strike? 71 Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower? 72 We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness. 73 Therefore proclaim the Purity of the name of your Lord, the Greatest. 74
