Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the Dawn 1 And by oath of ten nights. 2 by the even, and the odd, 3 and by the passing night, 4 Is this not a sufficient oath for intelligent people? 5 Bethinkest thou not in what wise thy Lord did with the 'A'ad: 6 [the people of] Iram the many-pillared, 7 The likes of whom had never been created in the land? 8 And Thamood, who hewed out the rocks of the valley? 9 And [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes? - 10 who all were insolent in the land 11 And who then spread a lot of turmoil in them. 12 So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment. 13 Truly your Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for man, when his Lord tries him by giving him honour and gifts, then he says (puffed up): "My Lord has honoured me." 15 whereas, whenever He tries him by straitening his means of livelihood, he says, "My Sustainer has disgraced me!" 16 But nay, nay, [O men, consider all that you do and fail to do:] you are not generous towards the orphan, 17 Nor do ye encourage one another to feed the poor!- 18 And ye devour heritages with devouring greed. 19 And love wealth with all your heart. 20 Nay! when the earth is made to crumble to pieces, 21 and thy Lord comes, and the angels rank on rank, 22 And hell is brought near that day; on that day man will remember, but how will the remembrance (then avail him)? 23 He will say: "Ah! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my (Future) Life!" 24 So on that day, no one punishes like He does! 25 Nor shall any bind with His bond. 26 O you tranquil soul, 27 Return thou unto thy Sustainer, well-pleased [and] pleasing [Him]: 28 So enter among My servants, 29 yea, enter thou My paradise!" 30
