And lo! Jonah verily was of those sent (to warn) 139 When he fled on the laden ship, 140 and sailed away in a laden ship, wherein people cast lots. Because he lost, he was thrown into the water. 141 And a fish swallowed him, and he was reproaching himself. 142 And had he not been of those who [even in the deep darkness of their distress are able to] extol God's limitless glory, 143 he would have tarried in its belly until the day they shall be raised; 144 ۞ But We threw him on a wide bare tract of land while he was ill; 145 And We caused to grow, over him, a spreading plant of the gourd kind. 146 We sent him to a hundred thousand or more people. 147 And they believed, so We gave them enjoyment [of life] for a time. 148 So inquire of them, [O Muhammad], "Does your Lord have daughters while they have sons? 149 Or did We create the angels females while they were witnesses? 150 It is only because of their false invention that they say, 151 " Allah has begotten," and indeed, they are liars. 152 Has He chosen daughters above sons? 153 What is the matter with you, how is it that you judge? 154 Then will you not be reminded? 155 Or have you a clear authority? 156 Then bring ye your Book (of authority) if ye be truthful! 157 They have set up a kinship between Him and the jinn; and the jinn know that they shall be arraigned. 158 Exaltations to Allah above what they describe, 159 Not (so do) the Servants of Allah, sincere and devoted. 160 But as for you, and that you worship, 161 cannot mislead anyone 162 except him who shall roast in Hell. 163 [The angels say], "There is not among us any except that he has a known position. 164 we are the rangers, 165 And verily we! we hallow. 166 And indeed they (Arab pagans) used to say; 167 'If only we had a reminder from the ancients, 168 we would have been sincere worshipers of Allah' 169 But they disbelieved in it; soon they shall know! 170 And, verily, Our Word has gone forth of old for Our slaves, the Messengers, 171 [That] indeed, they would be those given victory 172 and that Our hosts shall triumph. 173 So, (O Prophet), leave them alone for a while, 174 and see them [for what they are]; and in time they [too] will come to see [what they do not see now]. 175 Then for Our punishment are they impatient? 176 When it descends upon their courtyards, evil will be the morning of those forewarned. 177 So turn thou from them for a while, 178 And wait, for they will soon see. 179 Glory be to thy Lord, the Lord of Glory, above that they describe! 180 And Peace on the messengers! 181 and praise be to God, the Lord of all the Worlds. 182
