a large group of the earlier people 39 And a multitude of those of later time. 40 BUT AS FOR those who have persevered in evil - what of those who have persevered in evil? 41 (They will be) in the midst of a Fierce Blast of Fire and in Boiling Water, 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor pleasant. 44 Before they lived at ease, 45 And they have been persisting in the heinous offence. 46 And they were wont to say: when we have died and become dust and bones, shall we, then, verily be raised? 47 (We) and our fore-fathers of yore?” 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 “They will all be gathered together – on the appointed time of the known day.” 50 Then shall you, O you who err and call it a lie! 51 Will eat of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 And filling with it your bellies 53 and drink on top of that boiling water 54 Lapping it up like female camels raging of thirst with disease." 55 Such will be their dwelling on the Day of Judgment. 56 We created you; therefore why will you not believe? 57 Have you seen that which you emit? 58 Is it you that create it or are We the creators? 59 We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun, 60 From replacing you with others or raising you in a way you do not know. 61 You have certainly known the first creation. Why, then, do you not take heed? 62 Have you thought about what crops you plant? 63 Cause it ye to grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We willed, We could make it [dry] debris, and you would remain in wonder, 65 "Verily, we are ruined! 66 nay, we are deprived [altogether]." 67 Did you cast a good look at the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who sent it down from the clouds or is it We who have sent it down? 69 If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful? 70 And have you seen the fire that you ignite? 71 Is it you who have produced its tree or is it We who have produced it? 72 We have made it to be a reminder and a benefit for the wayfarers. 73 Glorify, then, (O Prophet), the name of your Great Lord. 74
