The nobles of Pharaoh said: "He surely is a clever magician. 109 and said, "He wants to expel you from your land." They asked (others), " what is your opinion in the matter? 110 They said: "Put him and his brother off (for a time), and send callers (men) to the cities to collect (and) - 111 who should bring to you every skillful magician." 112 The magicians came to the Pharaoh and said: "Is there reward for us if we succeed?" 113 The Pharaoh replied, "In addition to your rewards, you will become my close friends thereafter." 114 They said: "O Moses! wilt thou throw (first), or shall we have the (first) throw?" 115 "You cast it first," answered Moses. When they cast their spell, they bewitched the eyes of the people and petrified them by conjuring up a great charm. 116 We put it into Moses's mind by inspiration: "Throw (now) thy rod": and behold! it swallows up straight away all the falsehoods which they fake! 117 ۞ Thus the truth was upheld, and the falsehood that they practised was exposed. 118 The magicians who were defeated on the spot and were proved to be worthless, 119 And the sorcerers fell down prostrate. 120 They said, 'We believe in the Lord of all Being, 121 The Lord of Moses and Aaron. 122 Said Pharaoh, "You believed in him before I gave you permission. Indeed, this is a conspiracy which you conspired in the city to expel therefrom its people. But you are going to know. 123 "Be sure I will cut off your hands and your feet on apposite sides, and I will cause you all to die on the cross." 124 They answered: "We have (in any case) to go back to our Lord. 125 Thou takest vengeance on us only forasmuch as we believed the tokens of our Lord when they came unto us. Our Lord! Vouchsafe unto us steadfastness and make us die as men who have surrendered (unto Thee). 126
