The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I swear by the night when it draws a veil, 1 By the day when it appeareth in glory, 2 And the creating of the male and the female, 3 Verily, [O men,] you aim at most divergent ends! 4 As for he who gives and fears Allah 5 And believeth in goodness; 6 for him shall We make easy the path towards [ultimate] ease. 7 But as for him who hoardeth and deemeth himself independent, 8 And gives the lie to Al-Husna (see Verse No: 6 footnote); 9 We will make smooth for him the path for evil; 10 and their wealth will be of no benefit to them when they face destruction. 11 Indeed, [incumbent] upon Us is guidance. 12 And indeed the Hereafter and this world both belong to Us. 13 Wherefore I have warned you of Fire flaming, 14 None will [enter to] burn therein except the most wretched one. 15 Who gives the lie (to the truth) and turns (his) back. 16 For, distant from it shall remain he who is truly conscious of God: 17 Who giveth away his substance that he may be cleansed, 18 and confers no favour on any man for recompense, 19 Other than seeking the glory of his Lord, most high, 20 and the reward (of their Lord) will certainly make them happy. 21
